tourist attraction Kollam.

Beach Attractions
The Sunset

The
evening sun dipping slowly into the mammoth ocean and filling the whole
place with colours red and orange is a breathtaking view. Varkala is said to
have inspired the imagination of many a poets and painters. Standing on the
beach and allowing the Varkala waves to caress the feat is a favourite
pastime of many who come to the place. There are many stiff cliffs bordering
the place and offering a real treat to the eye.
The Temples
Varkala is also a centre of Hindu pilgrimage. The 800-year old Janardhana
temple atop the hill is dedicated to Lord Ayyappan and Hanuman. Tourists who
come to Varkala compulsorily visit the temple to seek divine blessings.
Although non-Hindus are not permitted to enter the inner sanctum, they can
move around the outer spaces of the temple. Another temple on the beach is
the 2000 year old Janardana Swamy Temple. This temple is also visited in
large numbers by the tourists. There is also a Nature Centre nearby.
The Festivals and Rituals
The Varkala shore is also known as 'Papanashini'. Legend has it that a dip
in the Varkala waters cleanses people of all their sins. At the break of
dawn after a new moon night in the Malayalam month of 'Karkidakam', the
famous 'Vavu Bali' ritual takes place. It is believed that the ritual helps
the soul of ancestors to rest in eternal peace.
Vendors in their small stalls selling a wide variety of decorative items,
mainly conch shells and beads further adds colour to the place. Varkala is a
unique combination of breathtaking sceneries and beautiful ancient temples.
