On the foots
of majestic Nilgiri hills is Coimbatore, known as the Manchester of South
India for its numerous textile mills. There are more than a hundred textile
mills in and around Coimbatore. Coimbatore also has a number of other
industrial units producing engineering equipment and electronic items.

Tourist Attractions
VOC Park and Zoo (Amusement Park)
The V.O. Chidambaram park can be described as many attractions clubbed into
one. The park has an aquarium that has an impressive collection of different
species of fish. The park also has a mini zoo. A toy train has also been
introduced for the amusement of children. The park is very popular among
children.
Agriculture University
One of the best universities of South Asia, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural
University is also a place worth visiting. Spread over an area of 300
hectares, the botanical garden of the University is a prime attraction. The
garden has many different species of flowering plants and trees.
Perur Temple
One of the seven Kongu Sivalayams, the holy Perur temple on the outskirts
of Coimbatore is also thronged by devotees. The outer part of the temple was
built in the early modern period but the inner sanctum is much older. The
deity in the temple is Lord Shiva.
Marudhamalai Temple
Another temple on the outskirts of Coimbatore, Marudhamalai temple of Lord
Subramanya is also widely visited by tourists. Legend has it that many
miracles are performed in this temple and any devotee who asks for favours
from god with a pure heart is always granted one. Several festivals are held
in the temple premises with pomp and gaiety.
Forest College
One of the rare tourist destinations of India where educational
institutions qualify as tourist destinations, the Forest College apart from
the Agriculture University attracts many tourists. The Forest College is one
of the oldest institutions of its kind in the country. The museum of this
College has an impressive collection of minerals, rocks, pests, snakes and
insects. Training to forest rangers is imparted here.
Excursion Delights
Siruvani Waterfalls

The
Siruvani waterfall and dam is located at a distance of 37 kms from
Coimbatore. A favourite pastime of the tourists visiting this place is to
taste the waters of Siruvani which is considered rich in minerals and taste.
Annamalai Wildlife Sanctuary
Situated at a distance of 90 kms from Coimbatore, this wildlife sanctuary
at an altitude of 1400 m is home to many animal species like elephant,
tiger, panther, deer, wild dog, jackal, pangolin and civet cat. Many
varieties of birds are also found in this wildlife sanctuary. A trip to
Coimbatore may be described as both informative and exciting.Informative
because the temples and educational institutions of the place shed a lot of
light on historical and biological aspects. Exciting because the amusement
parks and wildlife sanctuaries on the outskirts provide a whole lot of
refreshment to the tourists.
All in all, Coimbatore is a very good place for both the young and the old
